The modern science believe that if the human brain can work to its full potential, free of all the fears, tension, complexes
etc., it can be much more efficient (2-3 times) than the super computer.
The major functions of a super computer are its vast memory and speed. We are all too familiar with the small version
in form of a PC. We may not be able to fully comprehend the intricate functions of a super computer since we have not seen
or used it, but we may assume that the possibilities are unlimited. We have, though, seen its applications in complex assignments
such as launch of a rocket or managing a nuclear reactor, analysis of data from outer space, abstract mathematical calculations
as well as practical fields of household chores, medical research and human development. Yet, the possibilities and applications
are unlimited. Even today, improvisations are being made and in the next millennium, we might see the computer wizardry as
a way of life.
It may appear that the comparison between the super computer and human mind is a preposterous idea but we intend to prove
otherwise. We are spending billions of dollars in creating something that human brain can do even better at no cost. Means,
all of us are carrying something that is worth billions and yet unaware of its existence.
We have explained how "I" is formed in a human mind and starts controlling the life. We believe that this concept
is so far clear in the reader's mind. We would just reiterate that the creation of illusory "I" suppresses the natural
abilities of the brain and we keep on living in ignorance. The brain?uper computer can only work when it is free from "I".
Today, as people go on living under the influence of illusory mind, only 10% of the total brains power is used; and that too
in ignorance. Rest of the 90% ability is wasted in pointless thinking and imaginations. One more thing is apparent. It seems
that the human brain does not require invention of a computer of any sort, for it is much proficient itself. The mind or "I"
is just an illusion and it does not require anything else but words, thoughts and memories. In that situation, the nature
has to step in for progression and betterment of human life.
Therefore, the brain must have provided inspirations and instincts for new inventions. We all, on the contrary, keep on
living in a dream and yet credit ourselves with those discoveries.
If the brain has created the computers (along with other inventions), the computers cannot be better than the brain. We
may cite examples of Smt.Shakuntala Devi and Geri Kasparov and many others who have defied computers from time to time. We
shall now compare the basic functions of computer and brain.
The major functions of the super computer are memory and speed. Memory is confined in the Bites and speed in FLOPS (Floating
Point Operations per Second). One thousand Bytes are defined by K and one thousand K from a Mega. The memory of a standard
PC runs from 16 MB (Mega Bytes) to 22 MB. The storage space (of data) though goes upto many Giga Bytes (1000 Mega=1 Giga).
In spool type storage computers, the Bytes are calculated in Tera Bytes (100 Giga=1Tera). On the other hand, human brain uses
Neurons (or brain cells) to store the memory. Although the scientists have not been able to put together a definite figure,
recent findings put it to approx. 20 billion. These Neurons are, in turn, connected with each other through fibrous tissues.
These joints are virtually uncountable and the approx. figure is put at 1000 billion. If we consider each joint as one byte,
the approx. capacity would be 1000 Giga Bytes or 10 Tera Byte. As a RAM, this is much more than any super computer.
As far as the speed is concerned, speed of a modern computer is calculated in FLOPS or Floating Point Operations per Second.
K2 super computer's speed is approx. 1 Giga FLOPS. K2 was one of the earlier computers. By 1990 the speed was improvised ten
times; being 10 Giga FLOPS. Further innovation came in CM5 in 1992 which ran at 100 Giga FLOPS. The latest one, however, has
surpassed all earlier inventions and has a speed of 2 Tera FLOPS. We shall analyze the speed of human brain in comparison.
If there is an electrical vibration in Neuron, it is considered activated. When the electric charge flows in the Neuron,
it is said that the Neuron is "Fired". At a time 1% to 10% Neurons are fired in the brain. Each Neuron, in turn,
fires (or vibrates) 100 times per second. From the total Neurons of 20 billion, if 1% to 10%, i.e. 200 million to 2 billion
Neurons fire 100 times per second, we can surmise the speed of the brain. If one Fire of Neuron is considered 1 FLOPS, the
speed (of only 1% to 10% capacity) would be from 20 giga FLOPS to 200 giga FLOPS. If we assume that all the Neurons Fire in
the brain at one time at a rate of 100 Fires per second, the total speed would be 20 billion x 100 FLOPS per second; i.e.
2000 giga or 20 Tera FLOPS that is much beyond the speed of any super computer.
We can, therefore, see that in both the capacity and speed the human brain is much more efficient and capable that a modern
computer.
Many scientists have predicted that the next millennium would be of the computers. Even the science fiction movies have
been made with a theme of computers taking the control of the Earth. There is no doubt that the computer can be made to equal
the abilities of the brain but it cannot fully match the brain since it would lack sensory organs like eyes, nose, ears, tongue
etc. When the eye sees an object, many parts of the brain activate at one time. No one knows at how many places an information
is stored. We believe that no computer can match these functions however good it is. Eye is a unique gift of the Nature to
the mankind (and other creatures). At any moment, the eyes can absorb millions of details and the brain registers them and
relays the responses to different parts of the body at the same instance. This process is so fast and that we do not even
realize what has happened.
The brain, which has the ability to create vital organs such as limbs, eyes, ears, mouth, liver, heart, intestines etc.
in the womb is unmatchable. We cannot fathom its abilities and powers to sustain itself in the Nature. If we can rid ourselves
with pointless thoughts, imaginations and illusory "I", the human brain can work towards making the whole mankind
happy. In the same context, I, the body of Rao appeals to all the scientists in the world to work towards exploring the human
brain and discover its natural powers. You must, at least, take a step towards providing the mankind with an eternal happiness
and peace. You have already recognized the powers of the brain and accepted that its abilities are immense. All you need to
do is to look beyond the illusory mind and aim your research towards making the brain take charge of the things.
You have to understand the difference between mind and brain and defeat the monster of "I". Who are we to harass
our brain, which is pure and natural, with imposed cultures, values and illusory norms? There should be more research towards
finding the truth. The present state of sorrow of the human mind is nothing but an illusion of "I". Mind (or "I")
sustains itself merely on the memories and memories cannot provide happiness; as simple as that. Otherwise, there will be
people like Dr.Fukoaka who said, "Science is nonsense".
If we can bring about some changes in our present education system (which just teaches words and helps develop mind) now,
at least the following generations will be free of useless thoughts and incline towards natural abilities of the brain. Secondly,
if we can do some genetic research and find the genes that help create the mind, we can rid the mankind of this menace. The
mankind, then, can be truly happy and use the present technology in right perspectives.
